History of Gangotri Temple:

The Gangotri Temple, nestled in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, has a profound historical significance. It is believed that King Bhagirath undertook an arduous penance for a thousand years to bring Mother Ganga from heaven to Earth and release his ancestors from a curse. Pleased with his devotion, Mother Ganga agreed to descend, but she asked Bhagirath to seek Lord Shiva's help in sustaining her on Earth. Lord Shiva granted Bhagirath's prayers and held Mother Ganga in the locks of his hair, which marked the origin of the holy river Ganges.

The priests conduct various ceremonies, including Rudrabhishek and Abhishek, to pay homage to the divine presence of the river goddess.

The Gangotri Temple opens its doors for devotees on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, which usually falls in the months of April or May. The temple remains accessible for pilgrims until Diwali, when Maa Ganga returns to her winter abode at the Mukhyamath temple, situated 20 km away from Gangotri.
